I just got my first C64 and have a lot of questions. First off I am NOT a computer guy so I'm hear to learn and I don't know much. I've only ever messed around with the virtual C64 website, but it helped me understand computers a lot better so here I am. I picked up the machine last weekend; the unit, printer and disk drive are all in box, and very clean. The two local shops I've asked would prefer not to work on any of it. I've been told that the printer and drive might need recap and that I should order a new PSU which I did. I haven't tested it but the seller did and he said it was "glitchy" so I'm anticpating service of some kind. I would like to get as much current/repro/new stuff for the setup as possible and I'm curious what's out there because I want my focus to be on programming learning more so than electrical troubleshooting, if that makes sense. I know that might be a lot to ask. In any case, here are some of my many questions. This machine is from before my time (I was born in 89) so my first computer was a Macintosh Performa. Bear with me and help if you can.
I've been told there is a C64 mouse, what programs/interfaces was it used for?
What was the C64's target demographic and what did it compete against?
What joystick or controller (new or vintage) would be most recommended for gaming?
What media format was most associated with C64 (tape disk cartridge etc) Which one was "best"?
What accessories or upgrades do you recommend checking out?
Would a small CRT TV be of serviceable resolution to use with the C64?
Do I need only the single RCA cable for video or is there some kind of scaler needed for use with TV?
How does the system output audio and what do I need to get started with it?
Are matrix printer ink or ribbons available anywhere?
Where can I buy or trade home-brew games?
What resources (books, videos, websites) do you recommend?
Thanks guys I'm pumped.
