Let’s go, full throttle! We will try to set a high score for Beamrider! We all start at level 1, sector 1!
Entering the competition is easy, here is what you have to do: - Play the game and make a picture of your full screen when reaching a personal high score. - Make sure the high score is clear to see. - Enter the competition by posting your screen shot in this topic. - If you improve on your high score, you can enter a new high score as many times as needed - Be honest! We prefer you use original hardware and do not make use of cheats or save states. If original hardware isn’t possible, emulation is accepted. But again: be honest! - You can enter the competition right up till the last day, right up till midnight.
I will keep track of the rankings in this post: 1. 37.950 - BlueCursor 2. 36.440 - virtualsky 3. 23.750 - JohnnyMcGibbits 4. 20.680 - c64designsteepublic
Great! Is there a particular difficulty level we should be selecting at the beginning of the game? I'm assuming Skill 1 is okay, as this starts you off in Sector 1. Level 3 starts you off in Sector 11.... so I suppose it's not that the skill level changes anything about how the game plays.

I'm getting the hang of this... I scored 12000-ish this morning but forgot to snapshot the screen!!!
I've found a few things which have really helped:
1. Practice makes perfect, I've been playing it on and off all day 2. You get a feel for where the white ships are going to go so can be ready for them, and more importantly.....
3. I read the instructions. Yellow ships = extra lives!!!
Fantastic! Looks like you were seconds away from Sector 13, too. Yes, get those extra ships early and really try to get the mother ship in the earlier sectors to get your score up there before getting to the harder levels.
Another tip: you can use your torpedoes to take out certain enemies that your regular shots cannot. It's best hold them for the mother ship, but in a pinch, they can save you from losing a life.
I didn't know this game but I don't get it either, where are the lives? And those missiles do nothing?
The extra lives get picked up on the grid. They are the yellow objects that come toward you. You have to make contact with them (and avoid shooting them) when they approach. The missiles are used to shoot at the mother ship, at the end of every level. But, they can also be used to destroy objects/enemies on the grid, which are otherwise impervious to your blaster fire. But, you only get three torpedoes per sector.
Here's what the extra life looks like in the game...
Here's a real quick recording of some gameplay (note: there's no sound). In the clip, you can see me pick up two extra ships and get a successful kill of the mother ship using a missile. It's a little jumpy, but I'm on the netbook right now. But, hopefully it helps out anyway.

Thanks I see I need another version as mine (CCS) literally does not have the missiles. Yes you hear a sound, but there is no missile. With the lives I meant where is the number of lives? But I don't see that in your video either (?)
