Something I stumbled on a while back is the Colodore website, created by Pepto. If you're interested in tweaking the colour and contrast settings for the VIC II palette in emulators like VICE, this site might well be worth a look.
For a long time, I'd never been entirely happy with the default palette options, finding they were either too washed out, or too vibrant. The site allows you to adjust various sliders to see the effect on the C64 16 colour palette, then you can translate these to a VICE palette file (or your emulator of choice). There are ever several test graphics to see the effects of your fiddling
I've attached a sample VPL file I created, which I now use when capturing video footage - I feel it strikes the right level of saturation, without being too muted/garish!
