I'm not an expert on this subject, but my thinking is that, you would go ahead and launch the first side disk image as you would usually do:
x64 /path to disk/game-side-1.d64
This will get the game started. When it comes time to "flip sides", you just do an ALT-8, in VICE, and select the game-side-2.d64 disk image and continue on. At least, this is how I do it when I launch a game from the command line.

So you think there is no way to autostart a double-disk game completly from commandline ? I would like to create a menu entry in my Program Start Menu wich executes a commandline, to start Vice and the game with just one mouseclick.
Not saying anything is impossible... but how to do what you're trying to do with a single VICE command is beyond my knowledge.
But I think what you're looking for are disk games that have been converted to a cartridge image, like what's been done with the game Project Firestart. Someone'w taken that multi-disk game and put it into a cartridge image. There's no need to change disks.
Yes, I have e.g. the file turrican.tap (Size 2,2MB) wich can be loaded from commandline at once. But for Chessmaster2100, I only have the *.d64 version. Does someone know how to convert *.d64 to *.tap or to any other propriate format. As you told, this has been done for the game Project Firestart, so it seems to be possible.
